Raphaël Glucksmann

Essayist - European Deputy

Born on October 15, 1979, in Boulogne-Billancourt, Raphaël Glucksmann is an essayist and Member of the European Parliament. A graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), he began his career in journalism in Algeria (2002), before directing a documentary investigation (“Kill Them All!”) on France’s responsibility in the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda (2003/2004). He went on to produce a documentary on the color revolutions in Ukraine and Georgia.

From 2008 to 2013, he set aside filmmaking to work on Georgia’s European integration alongside President Mikheil Saakashvili. In December 2013, he took part in the pro-European demonstrations in Ukraine that led to the Maidan Revolution (February 2014).

Upon returning to France, he became actively involved in public debate, authored several essays, and increased his public interventions. During the European hospitality crisis in 2015, he mobilized in favor of dignified treatment for refugees, through actions, protests, petitions, and public statements.

In 2017–2018, he served as director of Le Nouveau Magazine Littéraire. In October 2018, he published an essay calling for a collective civic and political awakening Les Enfants du vide which quickly became a bestseller.

Soon after, in November 2018, he co-founded the political movement Place Publique, marking his formal entry into politics. He led the “Envie d’Europe” coalition list — notably in alliance with the Socialist Party — in the 2019 European elections. Elected as an MEP, he chaired for nearly three years the Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union. He is Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, and a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on International Trade.

In 2024, he leads the “Réveiller l’Europe” list for Place Publique and the Socialist Party in the European elections. He is co-chair of the French delegation within the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. He is a member of the AFET, SEDE, and INTA committees, and in February 2025, he joins the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield.

Raphaël Glucksmann is the author of several successful essays published by Allary Éditions, including: Lettre à la génération qui va tout changer (2021); La Grande confrontation – Comment Poutine fait la guerre à nos démocraties(2023).

Through his commitment to democracy, the Ukrainian resistance, and human rights — notably his advocacy for the Uyghurs — and through his writing, Raphaël Glucksmann promotes a vision of the world that is radically democratic, ecological, and humanist. All of his efforts aim at building a powerful ecological Europe capable of defending the strategic interests and core values of the European Union while addressing the environmental emergency.
